News Consumption & User Behavior – Tips for Content Curators

Two studies dealing with how users interact with news online one by "The online Journalism Review" and the other by "Pew Research" make the case for News curation and best practices for curators.  I will share excerpts of each study and then share my insight on how this relates to curation. 

Pew Research Study (How users find and interact with news online)

This study investigates user behaviors by tracking 25 top news sites and finds that news consumers can be divided into two distinct groups as follows:

  • Casual users - people who visit just a few times per month and spend only a few minutes at a site over that time span
  • Power users - people who return more than 10 times per month to a given site and spend more than an hour there over that time – Further Only six of the top news sites show power users in double digits (CNN 17.8%, Fox News 16.4%, Yahoo 14%, AOL 13.4%, Google 12.6%, MSNBC 11.1%)

It is apparent from this research that most people do not follow news religiously and any service that provides context to news will be offering a valuable service as it leads to a deeper understanding of the current events and offers a perspective news portals aren’t offering.

A curated news page lets users check in at their leisure and catch up with events in context.  Where news sites need to constantly update users with the latest news, news curation sites will be able to provide context and inform users by organizing and maintaining news from multiple sites in one place.  The next study sheds light on user habits and the best format for serving up curated pages.

The online Journalism Review (Curation Questions – How people seek information)

This study gets into users interaction with news pages by using eye track video to monitor the participant’s attention by frequency and duration.  The intent of this research is to suggest design practices for “curatorial” pages.  The study makes the following conclusions:

  • Most parsed sections (areas where most attention and time was spent)
    • Summary (100%)
    • Articles about (70.4%)
    • Multimedia (58%)
  • What was Clicked
    • 42% were headlines only
    • 24.6% were a headline and story abstract
    • 14.4% were a headline, abstract and photo
       
  • What  was it about the item that made them click
    • 81% cited information in the headline
    • 27% cited a photo
    • 21% cited information the abstract

Considering the fact most people do not follow news religiously and when they do they mostly look at headlines and summaries suggests that news curation sites should optimize presentation and navigation of headlines in context to provide value! 

Most topic curation products let the curators editorialize (change and modify) article headlines and summaries.  Curators will differentiate their art by the way they manage and maintain their curated articles through headlines, summaries and tags.
